Genny Sowers Maxwell

The Friendship Paddle 2017

Genny transferred to UCSB in 1993 from Sacramento with a car that needed a good mechanic. Genny met her future husband Josh Maxwell, who happens to be a mechanic, and their relationship took off. They married at Lake Tahoe and started a family. They now have 4 year old son, Blake, 7 year old daughter, Summer, and a Great Dane, Blue.

Genny has a strong sense of community for Santa Barbara and the world. She has volunteered teaching in Namibia, Africa and helped build homes in Sri Lanka after the tsunami hit in 2004. Genny now works for Citrix in the HR department.

Genny was having stomach problems and was diagnosed with rectal cancer that spread to her liver. Genny is fighting her cancer with radiation, chemotherapy, acupuncture and other means. Clearly, this has rocked their world but she has an amazing attitude. The Maxwell family frequently take their inflatable boat around the harbor and visit the “island” sandspit and seals. Genny finds inspiration and healing from the ocean and beaches around Santa Barbara. She has an amazing attitude and is supported by her family and friends.

Now it is our pleasure to show our love and support for Genny and her family. The Friendship Paddle community will cross the channel for Genny on September 23. Genny said, “I feel so loved and supported and I’m truly honored and humbled to be this year’s selection for The Friendship Paddle”.
